There’s a reason people search “how to make candles last longer” because most candles are not used the right way.
If your candle burns unevenly, tunnels in the middle, or loses its scent too quickly, it is usually not the candle. It is how it is being used. The good news is that a few small changes can completely improve your experience.
Most candle problems start from the very first burn. Wax has what is often called a “memory,” which means it will continue to burn the way it started.
If you blow out your candle too early the first time, you are setting it up to tunnel. Once that happens, it is difficult to fix completely.
When lighting your candle for the first time, let it burn until the melted wax reaches the edges of the container. This can take 2 to 4 hours depending on the size.
This step ensures:
Skipping this is the number one reason candles do not last as long as they should.
Before lighting your candle, trim the wick to about ¼ inch.
A long wick can cause:
A trimmed wick gives you a cleaner, slower, and safer burn.
A common question is, “How long should I leave my candle burning?”
The ideal time is 2 to 4 hours per session.
Burning for too short a time prevents a full melt pool. Burning for too long can overheat the wax and affect the fragrance.
Avoid placing your candle near:
Air movement can disturb the flame and cause uneven burning.
Once about ½ inch of wax remains, stop using the candle. Burning beyond this point can overheat the container and become unsafe.
Candle care is simple but often overlooked.
When you burn it correctly the first time, trim the wick regularly, and avoid drafts, you will notice that your candle lasts longer, smells better, and burns evenly throughout its life.
That is how a candle is meant to be enjoyed.
